Concurrent Breakout Sessions II

Breakout sessions are one hour each, run concurrently, and repeat. They will be held in various locations across the Park (travel time is built into the schedule). San Diego onsite attendees will be able to join two of the following breakout sessions:
- Case Study Encore I: Unpacking Organizational Change – Are you interested in how deep organizational change might unfold on the ground? Dive deeper into the morning’s case studies and compare the motivations and processes that led to redefined cultural institutions.
- Case Study Encore II: Innovation Labs – What does innovation really mean for the arts and cultural sector? Explore how innovation is nurtured in the cultural institution and learn more about the national Innovation Lab for Museums and National Innovation Lab for Performing Arts launched by EmcArts, the American Association of Museums, and the MetLife Foundation.
- Strategies for Employee Engagement – Curious about the ties between organizational culture, creativity, and employee engagement? Learn ways to inspire and support staff to perform at their peak.
- Linda Norris, Independent Museum Professional & co-author of an upcoming book about creativity in the museum workplace
- Leading from Across the Organization – Effective leadership is said to emanate throughout an organization – from all levels. Learn from rising Balboa Park professionals about their work in promoting employee engagement and organizational change.
- Maslow and Metrics – Synergy between organizational goals, values, and engagement is the hallmark of an effective and vital organization. But how do you know how much synergy is buzzing about your institution? Gain practical tools for assessing and promoting this vitality.
Michael Wall, Ph.D., joined the San Diego Natural History Museum as Curator of Entomology in January 2006 and was subsequently named Director of the Biodiversity Research Center of the Californias. He also currently serves as Vice President of Research and Public Programs.
Dalouge Smith joined the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory (SDYS) in February of 2005 with over ten years of arts administration and production experience. At SDYS he has overseen development of the organization’s vision to “make music education accessible and affordable for all students in San Diego County.” In pursuit of this vision, Dalouge has transformed SDYS from solely a program provider into a catalyst for restoring and strengthening music education in schools.
Joaquin Ortiz has worked with the Museum of Photographic Arts since 2009. Having a background in documentary media production and non-profit arts education, he brings new approaches to visitor engagement and outreach programming.
Dr. Marianna Adams is the Principal of Audience Focus, Inc., which provides evaluation, research, training, and concept development related to audience experience for museums and cultural institutions nationally and internationally.
Gail Anderson, president of Gail Anderson & Associates (GA&A), a museum management consultant, helps museum leaders position their institutions for greater relevancy and success in today’s complex world. Working closely with museum trustees, directors, and staff, Anderson facilitates strategic planning, organizational assessment and development, board development, as well as individual coaching.
Vivian Kung Haga has experience in cultural institutions as an administrator, curator, and educator.
Linda Norris is an independent museum professional who focuses on shaping compelling narratives, improving professional practice and listening to communities.
Barry Kibel guides the development, testing, and enhancement of products and tools, and serves as a senior facilitator at SEED.
Judith Koke, Director of Education & Interpretive Programs for The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, came to Kansas City in August, 2011, from the Art Gallery of Ontario, where she had been Deputy Director of Education and Public Programming since 2007.
Lori Fogarty is the Director and CEO of the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA), an institution that brings together collections of art, history and natural science under one roof to tell the extraordinary stories of California and its people.
JFK University's Museum Studies/MBA Program & Balboa Park Learning Institute
Ivy Young, a graduate student of JFK University's Museum Studies / MBA dual degree program, will be working on both her Master's thesis and Capstone projects this coming academic year. She is interested in the intersection between the business, government, and non-profit sectors and how these meet in the creation of vibrant and well-educated societies.
